Applying for Jobs Online

Our first word of advice - Professionalism!

More people are turning to online recruitment because it is a fast, easy and cost effective (in our case free!) way to advertise and search for job vacancies. However, as a method of communication, the internet can have a certain "casual" attitude associated with it.

Job applications are anything but casual, so our very first piece of advice to everyone is on the note of professionalism. Here are some quick pointers:

Follow the Instructions:

Some schools post vacancies but they do NOT accept online/fax applications because they require application forms to be filled in or they need to keep hard copies of applications to be kept on file.

VEC's are a good example; they have their own websites (listed here) with online application procedures and downloadable application forms. Primary schools have a preference for hard copy postal applications and often request an SAE to return materials to you.

Schools and colleges often request copies of your CV, qualifications and Teaching Council Registration details. Failure to supply the requested information often results in applications being rejected especially in cases where there has been a large volume of responses.

It is up to you to read the instructions for application carefully and follow them exactly.

Introduce YourselfIntroduce Yourself:

Always write a cover letter, even if it's just a few lines, otherwise your potential employer will get a blank e-mail with your name and a CV attached. Here is a quick example (feel free to copy it):

Dear Sir/Miss,

I wish to apply for the position of Geography Teacher as advertised on EducationCareers.ie
Please find attached a copy of my C.V. which includes references.

Thanking You,

Michelle O'Leary

Save AsSave As - Word Documents

For the technically advanced people who are now using Microsoft Word 2007 please bear in mind that the default file format for the latest version of this program is .docx

Most schools haven't updated to the new version of Word and can only open . doc files so if you send your CV in the new .docx format they will not be able to open it. We're sure you can see why this is a problem.

Spellchecking

There is no spell check function on our website so it can be useful to type your cover letter in Word and then copy and paste it when you have checked the spelling.

When entering information on this site read back over it before sending and check for spelling and grammatical errors - The same applies for your CV and any other information it contains.

Your Teaching Council Registration Details

Always supply you Teaching Council registration details with your application. All teachers working in primary or post-primary schools are required to register with the Teaching Council before commencing employment. See www.teachingcouncil.ie for full details.
